The Shank Family Web is not just for those with the name "Shank". The family name originated in Switzerland and was SCHENCK or SCHENK depending upon what documents you examine. One of my ancestors, Johanne Schenck adopted the spelling of SHANK in the 1700's in what is now Lancaster County Pennsylvania.

There are many variations to the original name relative to the spelling. Schenk, Shenk, Schank, Shanks, Shank, Shanks and the original.

There are Shank families that are not in any way related to this family. Those originated in the British Isles, primarily Ireland and Scotland. Most "Shank's" from those countries settled in Canada, New York state and other areas of upper New England. There are ties to Canada to this Shank family through Henry Shank, a descendant of Johanne's branch of the family.

Whether you are related to the "SCHENCK" line of Shank's, or one of the other spellings, you are welcome here.
